As we round the corner on deep winter, I find myself being grateful for the snowy days here in Boise period. Don't get me wrong, I can't wait for spring. I much prefer warmer weather and I’m no winter sportswoman. However, winter provides the necessary pause that I need to burrow deep into the artistic visions and let them surface like Persephone from Hades. This winter is no different, as I've been working on an album with some of my music friends, and it caused me to dig up some tracks from a show we played last year at Pengilly’s Saloon for Treefort Music Fest.
Lately I’ve been so grateful that music is a vehicle to work through an enormous range of issues that stir within me. Whether it's rage at what’s happening in the political sphere, moments of frustration with myself, gratitude between friends, beautiful moments I witness throughout the day - all of it can be worked out in the music. And what better medicine, that I get to turn around and share it? The collection of songs I'm working on currently are a culmination of many years of my heart’s work and hopefully a little wisdom too. Only half of the songs I’m sharing here will be featured on the album. They are just unpolished show recordings but it will give you a sneak peek of what’s to come. It’s only the beginning as I have so much music (written and not yet written) left to share, that it truly feels like the tip of the iceberg.
This year, Cactus Moon will not be playing Treefort, sadly. I’ll be busy running Filmfort, as I’m also involved with the film festival. But it’s fitting that the album should come out shortly afterwards. For me, Treefort is the best way to turn the page from Winter to Spring, fitting snugly near the Equinox. Right when the daisy’s start pushing up, and the snow on the top of the foothills starts melting, and Boise opens it’s door to hundreds of artists from all across the country/world; infusing our little city with creative awe and wonder.
It's always my favorite week of the year. Hope you enjoy the tapes :)
